Here’s the Yellowjackets tune featuring Russell on piano and the WVJO. I arranged this for big band and play the EVI. Pretty good blend with EVI, trumpet, alto and soprano on the head. The patch is something I came up with using Tonebank editor for the JV1010. NOTE: Sound in one side at times.

I don’t do many Latin gigs these days but this was a cool gig. Most of the band was flown in from Puerto Rico where Tony Vega is a well known star. We rehearsed once and then did this gig. All these cats were top notch salsa cats. Very cool being the gringo for a day.

Here’s Carl and I playing the old MF tune. I’m not at my best here but I thought you’d enjoy this. I developed a serious head tilt during the years when I didn’t practice much. Compare to the later videos and you can see and hear the difference. The first thing that got me back on track was The Shulman System.

composed, arranged & produced by Eric Bolvin

Stream for high-speed Dr. Funkenstein (26.3MB)
Stream for dial-up Dr. Funkenstein (5.3MB)

Recorded at Waves Smokehouse at our CD release party, February 22, 2002.

I wrote this tune after the untimely death of my friend Kenny Baker.Kenny Baker was the sax player in John Lee Hooker’s band. He was the funkiest cat around and we did many gigs together. His nickname was Dr. Funkenstein. Whenever we played, we had no charts. Kenny just played these simple, funky as you wanna be licks and we harmonized. And man the cat could solo! One thing I miss is his smile when I’d walk into one of his gigs. He’s always say “About time you showed up. Now get out your horn!” Dr. Funkenstein is basically a jam in G dorian. The melody is a horn riff. I do this tune differently every time I play it. That’s the whole concept. Kenny never played the same thing twice in his life. You should hear his horn licks for “Midnight Hour”!

Today we begin with Peter Booras on drums and EB on midi EVI. The patch is developed by Matt Black at Patchman Music. It’s a Roland JV-1010, Digitech 256xl effects, Peavey Unity 1000 mixer and Roland KB 300 amp.Using the balanced out of the amp, I’m in the house. That’s my rig. Ken Harrill treats us to some eerie guitar work which brings in the tight horns. We hit the bridge and then Tom Politzer takes over on sax. Of course Tom is the solo tenor sax with Tower Of Power and he gets a little bit funky right here. Filling out the Quorum is Dan Robbins on bass and Sue Crossman on keys. The video was shot, edited, and co-produced by John Gehman, who has been my bud since we were like 11. Special thanks to Don Heinsen who did the audio and to Joel Wyrick for the use of his club. The table of barbecue they brought out for the band was awesome!
